I’ve had these three Musical Treasure Chests at the Oregon Country fair. They got dusty, as things do there, so I don’t feel I can sell them new, your good fortune, right? Musical Furnishings was very popular online this year, with Tweets from famous musicians and numerous reposts of our videos. On one of these moments of fame, a Dean at Occidental Collage in LA saw these designs and wanted me to come and speak to the music, art and engineering students of his school. Sophie and I went down and stayed on campus for a few days while we met with the students. The school also purchased three of my chime tables and carefully placed them throughout the campus. Employment opportunities for college graduates is constantly changing and the school wanted to show a more alternative way of going about it. I spoke about my self promotion and use of youtube to communicate what it is I do. I’ve had well over 400,000 views of self produced videos. In addition to that, by courting television and print media, I’ve been very successful in having my designs become actual content for these shows and publications, instead of traditional advertisements.

By having more of a say in my promotion, I ultimately have more control over who my clients are, and as most business folks will tell you, its all about the people. And I have had the great honor to create interactive designs for amazing people, and I attribute that to my DIY promotion.

We stayed on campus, in this beautiful dormitory. To be honest, the palm trees never got old. Neither did the sun, or the buoyant, vitamin d sufficient student body.

These guys arranged to have super special music house set up for that particular school year. They were fantastic. Some of the students we attempting to bring a musical instrument to market, so we had plenty to talk about.

This was a shop open late in the surrounding neighborhood. Colorful place.

NW Artist Tor Clausen builds surprisingly interactive installations. By changing the expectations we have of musical instruments as well as functional furnishings, he has opened up a new way to explore music. Private and public commissions are welcome. Extra long table for a great music teacher back east.

This is a first. A super long, super tall Rumba Table. Its a 2×6 grid and has 30″ legs. He called me because he wanted a table he could take into his classes but also keep at home. It was designed to stay up alone a wall like a side table. It has the Large Cajon drum and a snare, alone with numerous other instruments. Its nice to be able to stand and play. Cool table.

I received a phone call from Wilson Chan of ZEntertainment of Hong Kong in the late winter. He was looking for a draw for the opening ceremonies, and felt that I was a edgy western designer, making designs in a new exciting way. I think he also saw that I enjoyed making videos, and might be up for a show. The mall was spectacular, with hi-end retailers as well as the prominent presence of large stores like Ikea and Restoration Hardware. They ordered a number of my pieces and flew me out for the ceremony. For over a week, I spoke on stage to audience, sometimes in the hundreds, about the designs and how I came to build them. I was interviewed over a dozen times by newspapers and magazines, and numerous television broadcasts. There was even a confetti canon. The celebration was a hit.

I received a call from Tibor Mihelic Syed regarding my musical tables. He wanted them to be part of a play he was directing for the Ljubljana City Theatre (in Slovania)… Bertolt Brecht’s Trommeln in der Nacht. I was unable to attend, but from viewing the video, it looked to be a wonderful play, and I was proud to have worked with them on the musicality of the set.
